Our child (dog-Valkyrie) has found a new thing to do in our home. She sneaks on the couch in the loft upstairs. We're not sure where she got this from or why she started doing this. She's not allowed on any other furniture in the house. I guess she thinks because we hardly ever use the couch upstairs that it needs some attention and love. lol! Child, PLEASE! We have caught her doing this a couple of times.. hints why we have a sheet on the couch. Normally, if she sees us while she's laying on the couch, she jumps down immediately (GUILTY!) But this time, she didn't budge! And to top that off she stuck her tongue out at me. What am I going to do with her?! LOL! I took her picture, let her enjoy rebelling for a split second, and then made her get down. I'm a terrible mother, I know! Enjoy seeing my dog "backtalking" to me!

However, cleaning and organizing is my to do list for next week. I will be having a sale coming up (Valentine's Day!) so look out for some announcements for that. I have a couple of paintings to finish before I add more to my plate.

I have the BEST Clients!

I have to brag on my clients a little bit! They are the BEST and they spoil me... just a little bit (ok, a lotta bit!).
My last wedding was such a treat for me! My clients put me in a very very nice hotel... you know the ones that serve freshly baked cookies at 3:00 in the afternoon and hot tea and coffee is freely available to you all day long. Yeah, one of those! They made it an extra special weekend get-away for me and my husband. Such a treat! My clients even had a sweet goodie bag waiting for us in our room. The bag was filled with our favorite snacks. They even put hand sanitizer in there (I can't go anywhere without that!). Their hospitality made me feel so special. What a blessing!

Angela and Ross, thank you for being wonderful clients! Thank for you giving my husband and I a much needed weekend retreat. It was an honor to be part of your special day!

Graphic Design: Bridal Shower Invitations

A client contacted me last month about designing some invitations for a bridal shower she is hosting. I painted a couple of canvases for her a year ago (I still can't believe it's already been a year!) and she knew I did graphic design as well.

She gave me this to run with:
"I would like it to have gray and yellow in it. The bride is very modern and likes clean cut designs. She is planning on using billy buttons, yellow tulips, and oncidium orchids at her wedding (I think billy buttons are her favorite flower that she’s discovered though). I think I would like the designs to have flowers on it."

I did a little research because I wasn't sure what billy buttons were. Now, I'm pretty sure, I'm in love with them. They are so cute.

Graphic Design: Christmas Cards

A couple of weeks ago, a dear friend of mine called me in a panic. Her photographer (due to uncontrollable circumstances) wasn't able to make their Christmas cards. I had about two hours to design a card and send them to my lab so they would arrive in time for her to send them out.... and they did! What a cute family! Their photographer did a great job on this photo!

Capt. & Mrs. Williams- Alabama Wedding

I am back from my "vacation" and I have some blogging I need to catch up on.

Ross and Angela were married at the beginning of the month at Serenity House. It was a beautiful location, beautiful ceremony, and a beautiful couple. I know God has great things in store for this couple.

Postcards were given to guests when they entered. Guests wrote notes and marital advice to the couple and placed them in a box. The maid of honor is mailing a couple of cards a month to the couple (for the first year of their marriage). What a wonderful idea!

I just think the picture below was too funny not to post. I remember doing this as a kid, but I'm sure I wasn't as cute as this little boy.

Gifts: Wedding

At the beginning of the month, I traveled to Alabama for Ross and Angela's wedding. I was so excited to see them, take their wedding pictures, and give them their wedding presents. I packed everything (camera equipment and all) in two suitcases. When I zipped up my suitcase, everything seemed to be well packed....seemed to be. After arriving in Alabama, I realized that was not the case. Their wedding present broke in half. :(

I was so sad and disappointed. I worked hard on their gift and I had to give it to them broken. However, there was a Hobby Lobby half a mile from my hotel (Praise the Lord!). Gorilla Glue to the rescue!

This stuff works! I glued it back together Mr. & Mrs. Williams were pleased with their gift. I'm so thankful I had another gift for them -custom handmade stationery. I think it's probably my favorite stationery I've made.

Everyday is a new adventure in my life!

Gift: DIY Gift Card Holder

Our family gave a lot of gift cards as presents this year. I am a HUGE fan of gift cards (and donations in honor of others) as gifts. The main gift cards we buy are Starbucks and Shell gas cards. Gas is a necessity if you have a car and gas is so expensive. And well, I guess when we give Starbucks gift cards we are just feeding others addictions. My husband loves coffee and I love tea, so there's nothing wrong with a little pick me up (everyday!)
I have posted a project similar to this one before on my blog. It was a letter project. You can use that same card sleeve to put gift cards in. You can find the template for it at Creature Comforts Blog.

Enjoy the project and get creative. Everyone loves a homemade gift... especially if there's a little something extra inside.

Gift Idea: Date Night

I got this idea from Pinterest (I'm addicted!). [I can't find the exact link for this idea, but I didn't come up with it.... but I still LOVE it!] I gave this as a birthday gift to my husband, but I think it would be great for Christmas too.
The idea is that each month, a date night is planned. Items such as gift cards or money is placed in each envelope for each month. I know it has helped us budget better with date nights. I buy a gift card at the beginning of the month to wherever we would like go or do. Then I place it in the envelope and forget about it until my husband says, "Let's go on a date." Ideas: Movies, Dinner, Go Karts (we're doing that soon), Ice Cream. Free Things: Picnic at the park, Movie Night at home, etc.

Gift: Deployment Countdown Jar

I have a friend whose husband is deployed. I thought I would make her a gift to help the months pass a little quicker.
I read Tour of Duty:Preparing Our Hearts for Deployment several months ago. In this book, the author explains how with small children, it helps for them to have a visual countdown of when their family member will return home. A common example being a candy jar. Each day the child will take one piece of candy out. The remaining pieces will be the number of days left to wait. However, I am all about equal opportunities. You don't have to be a child to have a candy jar! If my husband was deployed, you can bet money that I would have one of these.... for me!

This Christmas, don't forget about those that won't be able to spend Christmas with their loved ones because of their service to our country. Show them a little extra love this Christmas season!

DIY: Card Holder

I love our home. It's spacious, nice, and I can paint walls any color I would like (something I didn't have in our last home). However, there is one little space that drives me crazy!!! The wall dividing our dining room from our living room and kitchen has a thermostat on it. The thermostat is off-centered, boxy, and an eye sore. I'm sure I would feel differently if it wasn't seen by everyone who comes into our home.

I thought of a plan to "fix" this. No, didn't move the thermostat. I just covered it up....with MAIL. I LOVE getting mail, and I keep cards and letters that are sent to me. There is something special about words written on paper... I just can't explain it.

I bought an ugly canvas with a beautiful frame at a thrift store a couple of months ago (I'll have to post the before picture later). It has been patiently sitting in our garage until I figured out what I wanted to do with it.

Here it is!!!!

Old frame, picture wire, and clothes pins. Love it! And that's a wedding invitation covering up the ugly thermostat.

Captain America Birthday

A couple of weeks ago, we celebrated my husband's birthday....and he LOVES Captain America. His birthday present as homemade by yours truly. But she wanted a white shirt that would say "Theatre Nerd" for her students. These shirts were a surprise for them after their big performance. By the look of their faces in this pic, I think they liked them. And the, she gave them an even bigger surprise.... tickets to see Lion King on Broadway. I know they are going to LOVE it!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are a few things that are happening at RCP to support this special event.

Event #1: All Canvases are 15% off this month. Sale ends on October 31st.

Event #2: I CUT MY HAIR!!!!!! That's right. 10.25"!!! My grandmother had breast cancer. When she was going through her chemo and radiation, I told her I would shave my head like hers. She told me not to do that, but to donate my hair so other people may have wigs. So, I have done it 5 times. People are always shocked when I cut it because it's such a drastic change. But what most people don't realize is I grow it out to cut it. Believe me, I wouldn't keep it that long if it wasn't for a good cause. Long hair is beautiful, but it's a lot of work to keep up with.
I usually donate my hair through an organization called Locks of Love, but this year I decided to donate to a different organization- Beautiful Lengths. You can check out both of these if you're interested in how to donate.

A Wedding Gift

Courageous

I know it's now almost 6:00 PM and I realized I didn't have a post scheduled for today. Oops! I guess everything works out for a reason because I was thinking yesterday that I really wanted to blog about the new movie "Courageous". Today is the perfect day for it.... nothing was on my posting schedule.

My husband and I finally had a date on Saturday. So, we went to the theatre to see a movie that I said I wanted to see... several months ago. He asked me if I would like to see it and I was completely shocked. I think because it wasn't a chick flick, he was more excited about seeing this movie than all the other ones I had mentioned.
I have never cried so much in a movie before. I started crying 5 minutes (literally) into the movie and didn't stop until I walked out of the theatre. And I laughed sooooo hard!!!!! You know the kind of laughs where your whole body shakes and you can't control it. Yeah, that was me! I laughed, I cried, I was scared, and I was comforted. I should probably elaborate on the scared and comforted part.
My husband is in the military.....security forces (military cop). He carries a gun, he puts his life on the line, and I worry about him EVERYDAY. I know that he was designed to do this job. God created him completely different than me (I guess that's why we balance each other!). Watching this movie, let me see a glimpse of what he does at work. I know everyday isn't crazy, but I know there are days when I can just feel in my soul that he didn't tell me everything that happened at work- to protect me and keep me from worrying even more. My husband has also mentioned the idea of working for Las Vegas Metro before.... talk about being scared... me, not him!
But, I was also comforted as well. Comforted in the fact that God LOVED US SO MUCH that He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins. I appreciated how they shared that in this movie and I appreciate how that was shared with me when I came to know the Lord as my Savior. There is nothing on this earth more comforting than knowing that God has your back and that one day you will spend eternity with Him.

Game Day Recipe: Jalapeno Poppers

I LOVE Football! I love Saturdays! And I love Hot/Spicy Food!
I found this recipe on Sandra Lee's website. It's delicious and perfect for tailgating or watching football on the couch.
I'm sure Sandra's turn out a lot prettier than mine, but they still taste good!

Ingredients:
12 large jalapeno peppers
4 Cheddar cheese sticks
24 pieces center-cut bacon (we use turkey bacon)
1 tablespoon chili powder

Directions:

1.Preheat a grill to medium heat.

2.Cut about 1/2-inch off the top each jalapeno pepper. Take the top pieces that you just cut off, cut the sides off and reserve, discarding the middle stem pieces. These will be used to plug the open end of each pepper to help keep the cheese from melting out. Using a straight peeler, scrape out the seeds and ribs from the inside of each of the peppers.

3.Slice each cheese stick into pieces that are just slightly shorter than the jalapenos. Stuff a pepper with a piece of cheese. Take the reserved side pieces and place them into the open end of the pepper, covering the cheese and plugging the hole. Take a piece of bacon and wrap the pepper from the bottom end to the top end, making sure to secure the "plug" at the top end. Take a second piece of bacon and lay it down on a clean work surface. Roll up the pepper so that it is almost completely covered in bacon and secure with a toothpick. Repeat with the remaining peppers, cheese, bacon and toothpicks. Sprinkle each with chili powder.

4.Place on the grill, cover and cook over indirect heat until the bacon is crispy, 15 to 20 minutes, making sure to turn every 3 to 4 minutes.

"Happy Birthday Rhia!"- Sang to the tune of "Happy Birthday Jesus!".... don't ask why?!

Today is one of my very dear friend's birthdays. She is so special to me. We made it all the way through undergrad and grad school together. Without her, I don't think I would have graduated- seriously! We live way too far apart now. Maybe one day we will live in the same state! How wonderful would that be?!?!?!?

Her and her husband just bought a new house, so I thought I would make some things for her office (she has a fabulous business called rhiDESIGN). She is so creative and I love to receive hand made things from her, so I decided to make her something. What was I thinking? I found an inspiration picture on Pinterest.

My turned out nothing like this. What went wrong? lol! Maybe next time, I should just send her a 30X40 canvas. SIKE!

But, there is a tradition that Rhia and I have... for every holiday, we give crosses. I'm really not sure how that started either. LOL! Anyways, I made her one.

I wouldn't be who I am today without my sweet friend Rhia! Rhia, thanks for being such an inspiration to me. You are blessing to the Lee family (as well as Zak and Juneau). Thank you for being an example of a godly woman in my life. Continue to be obedient to His calling!

I have been selling some items on Etsy! I sell a lot of Distressed Wooden Letters. I sent this one off last week.

I'm so thankful for the postal service. I LOVE to send mail, but I also LOVE to receive mail! Thanks to my wonderful mother-in-law for this fun care package. There was a little something for everyone (including Valkyrie, our child... a 3 year old toddler trapped in a dog's body). Her nickname is Doggie America by the way. lol!

I also received this picture from one of my Etsy clients. I did a custom order for her. I'm so pleased with how it turned out. She is too!

I have a friend who sent me a pic she found on Pinterest. She loved the words and texture of the painting, but she wanted it a lot larger. So, I hope I made her dreams come true with this painting. lol!

I didn't have any gray paint readily available, so I mixed a custom color. I would like to call this one "Roberts Gray"- (I will probably never be able to make this exact color again, so enjoy it!) This painting was a lot of fun to do, but a little challenging. I wanted to give her the texture she wanted, so I tried a few things, including tea bag staining. I thought it was the perfect idea until I saw it after it dried. It wasn't dark enough. My next option.... Antique Stain. It was darker and still provided some texture. I left it at that.

Take a look at the final product. I think I need one of these for my house. It's one of my favorite hymns.

An Apple Pie Kind of Week

That doesn't mean what you probably think it means. Let's just say this week hasn't been "as sweet as pie". But it hasn't been too terrible either. Usually when there is stressful week in the Lee household, we have some sort of dessert to make it better. This week, it's apple pie... my husband's favorite! I know it's probably not the healthiest way to end a week, but when you have a crazy schedule like our house does, you do what you gotta do. lol!

I remember the first time I made an apple pie for my husband... it took FOREVER! It was definitely made with love! I made the pie crust from scratch. What was I thinking? I was newly married and had no clue. Now, after talking with my husband's grandmother (a fantastic baker and cook), I found the secret- Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust! I didn't believe her at first. I thought everything she made was from scratch. She laughed when I told her I made mine from scratch. "Oh honey, I just buy mine at the grocery store already made." Thanks Granny...now you tell me! I can now make apple pie in about 15 minutes (minus the baking time).

A freshly baked one of these will be waiting for my husband this evening:

I have tried about 5 or 6 different apple pie recipes, but there is nothing like the recipe off the side of the pie crust box. I have a feeling Pillsbury has tested it out quite a few times to get it exactly right. Oh and if you have something against refrigerated pie crust- oh well! Make your own from scratch, but this sister needs all the help she can get!

Ingredients:
Crust:
1 Box Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts

Filling:
6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (6 medium)- Fiji apples are my favorite for this recipe
3/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions:
1. Heat oven to 425. Place 1 pie crust in ungreased 9-inch glass pie plate. Press firmly against side and bottom.
2. In large bowl, gently mix filling ingredients; spoon into crust-lined pie plate. Top with second crust. Wrap excess top crust under bottom crust edge pressing edges together to seal; flute. Cut slits or shapes in several places in top crust.
3. Bake 40-45 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. Cover edge of crust with 2-3 inch wide strips of foil after first 15-20 minutes of baking to prevent excessive browning. Cool on cooling rack at least 2 hours before serving.

-Our family can never wait 2 hours!

Recipe: Mississippi "Mug" Pie - Hungry Girl

I'm a Southern girl who LOVES sweets... I guess this recipe is perfect for me! I watched the making of this lovely dessert on Hungry Girl.This show is always helpful in taking some of my favorite dishes and foods and tweaking them to make them healthy. What can I say? I LOVE to eat! But some of the foods I really like aren't worth going to the gym for.

Ingredients:

8-10 oz. coffee mug

3 devil's food cake mix (not packed)
1 tbsp. fat-free liquid egg substitute (like Egg Beaters Original)
One 25-calorie packet hot cocoa mix (like Swiss Miss Diet or Nestlé Fat Free)
1 tsp. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
One 60-calorie sugar-free chocolate pudding snack (like the kind by Jell-O), divided
Optional: Fat Free Reddi-wip

Directions: (1 serving)

1. Spray a large microwave-safe mug with nonstick spray. Add cake mix, egg substitute, cocoa mix, and 2 tbsp. water. Mix well.
2. Add chocolate chips and about one-third of the pudding to the mug, and stir gently to combine. Microwave for 1 minute.
3. Fluff with a fork, and then gently mix in the remaining pudding.
4.Microwave for 1 more minute.
5.Let cool slightly. Top with Reddi-wip.

You can find the nutritional facts as well as a printer-friendly copy of the recipe here. You don't have to feel guilty about eating dessert. I don't! lol!

Recipe: Americana Italiana

I can't take credit for this recipe. I watched Rachel Ray make it on one of her shows, but it has become a favorite in our household. (I think she calls it something else, but Americana Italiana is shorter.)

Ingredients:
6 slices peppered bacon
1 box whole wheat penne pasta (cooked)
1 can fire roasted tomatoes (28 oz.)
2 medium red onions (chopped)
3 cloves of garlic
1 container of chicken stock
Fresh parsley and basil
Mozzarella or Parmesan cheese (shredded)

1. Heat up Olive Oil.
2. Cut up bacon and add to skillet. After about 3 minutes, add onions and garlic.
3. When onions are soft, add chicken stock and tomatoes. Bring to a boil and then let simmer for 15 minutes.
4. Add pasta, parsley, and basil.
5. Top with cheese.

I hope this makes it to your dinner table tonight! Enjoy!

Custom Etsy Order

I LOVE Etsy. I have a couple of items listed on Etsy for sale, but not everything I offer.
I received an order on Etsy for a custom wooden name. The name also needed to stand alone. Meaning, it wasn't going to lean against anything or be hung on a wall.... a Challenge, but I'm always up for a challenge. :) I've never done this before (exactly like this), but the customer was very patient with me.
She sent me a font that she liked... Primitive. So I tried my best to get close. "The more rustic/primitive you can make them look, the better!"

DIY: Cooking Utensil Holder

I thought it would be great for holding my big cooking utensils on my kitchen counter... however, the salmon color did not match the color scheme in my kitchen. I turned to my handy-dandy friend.... It's Finished!

Last Wednesday, I finished one of the hardest projects I've ever worked on. One large picture with several hundred people, combination of 11 separate pictures, taken 4 different days. I'm tired just thinking about it. :)
My husband's boss wanted a picture of his squadron. This is not a common picture taken by the Air Force. So, my husband volunteered me for the job. It was such an honor to take this picture. I had it finished just in time to give it to the Major before his deployment this week. He loved the picture....I was so worried it wasn't going to be what he envisioned.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

In between the two senior sessions (Daniel and Caleb) last week, we had a fun mini session. The boys brought their matching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle shirts and were ready for some awesome actions shots. They channeled their inner "Ninja Turtle" and pretty much did EVERYTHING asked of them... and more.

Oh, and in case you didn't know.... I was a HUGE Ninja Turtle Fan when I was younger. That's probably really weird considering I'm a girl. LOL! I had the sleeping bag, lunch box, and movies (back then, there were VHS).

Caleb- Minot, ND Senior Session

Last weekend, I flew to Minot, ND to spend time with Caleb and his family. Caleb is a senior at Minot High School this year. It was an honor to be able to take his senior pictures. Caleb and his family are very special to us. They will forever be part of our family... no matter how far apart we are.

Nursery Birds

These are FINALLY finished! I was suppose to have these finished several months ago.... but that didn't happen. They are a gift for a friend of mine.

My friend is having a little girl soon.... very soon.... and these bird paintings are for the nursery. I'm pretty sure this nursery is going to be the cutest room ever (my friend is a wonderful designer... and very creative!)

A Late and Early Gift

I have a friend who was ordained as a minister several months ago. (He's the husband of Alisha!) He is a youth minister at Bedico Baptist Church in Ponchatoula, Louisiana and I was suppose to get this canvas to him months ago. Well, as you can see.... that didn't happen! With our move to Vegas along with the craziness of life, it didn't get done when I wanted it to. I told myself that if I didn't have it finished by his birthday (September 25th), then I could submit my name to the "Worst Friend in the World Contest" (I'm not sure if they really have that, but I really don't want my name associated with it!). However, there is good news! I made it by his birthday! Woo-hoo!

Dustin has a passion for serving the Lord, and he has a servant's heart pretty much bigger than anyone I know. I asked his wife which scripture was his favorite and she gave me this one.... Mark 10:45, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." I LOVE that verse! It's definitely on my top 10 list!

I placed post-it notes (about 20 of them) on the wall in Dustin's office where I wanted him to hang this canvas. That was SEVERAL months ago! So, I'm sure he's found something a little cooler that post-it notes by now to fill the space. I hope you have a fun place for this in your office my friend! Enjoy it! My husband said it was "manly" and he would hang it up in his office (that's always the test when I'm painting for guys).

Big Girl J-O-B!

One of my best friends just got her first "Big Girl Job!" LOL! I am so proud of her. She is a physician's assistant in New Orleans.... a great one at that! I always tell her I'm thankful she uses the side of the brain that I don't. We are alike in a lot of ways.... except how we think. She's left brained and I'm right brained.... the picture below will give a better explanation (Visual and Non-verbal is characteristic of right-brained people). LOL!

I thought that my friend, Alisha, needed a little something to celebrate her new job! I put together a few of her favorite snacks to get her through her mentally draining days (I don't know how she does it!)

One more little note: Not only is Alisha a PA, but she's also a youth minister's wife. She is supportive of her husband and the kids in their youth group. (I put a little something in her package for them too... I know you always have a house full of kids.)

My only request: Give this Box Top to a kid in your youth group (who collects them for their school) or save it and give it to me later. I'm a Box Top FANATIC! I will buy the more expensive item, just because it has a Box Top on it. I collect them for a 5th grader that is close to our family. My husband even joins in on it. When he goes to the store with me (or I send him alone), he can never remember the brand of things we get, so he looks for the Box Tops. LOL! Yeah, we're pretty crazy!

Compassion International

This past weekend, my husband and I received a letter from the child we sponsor through Compassion International. It brightens my day when I get go to the mailbox and find a letter from him. Woo-hoo!!
The child we sponsor is named Ezequiel. He is 4 years old and he lives in Ecuador.... he is absolutely adorable. We have a picture of him (that his mom sent us) sitting on our kitchen counter. He has the biggest grin on his face. Oh how it brings joy to my soul! (I should have scanned it and posted it on here, but that didn't happen this morning... sorry!) Every time his mother writes us a letter, Ezequiel draws a picture on the back. I LOVE his drawings. I have his beautiful artwork hanging in our dining room.... it's my favorite art in our house!

Lord, I Need You

I just finished this canvas (and I'm taking it to the post office today). My client wanted the lyrics of Chris Tomlin's "Lord, I Need You" painted on a canvas. "Our new favorite song is Chris Tomlin's Lord, I Need You. And on the day Faith was born we listened to it on the way to the hospital for peace and comfort. To this day, I sing it to her often. So, it has sentimental value."
The lyrics of this song has been the cry of my heart this past week. Many things have been going on in our family.... the only thing I can say and sing is "Lord, I Need You." I almost kept this canvas for myself, but I thought that would probably not be the right thing to do.

Back-to-School

I have a friend who is a high school teacher. She is a FABULOUS teacher, I might add! This is her second year teaching, so I thought I would make her a little something for the start of a new year.

When I was visiting her last year, several of her students showed up to class without a pencil (I couldn't believe it. Who shows up to class without a pencil?!?!??!). I saw some back-to-school printables at eighteen25 and I thought they were perfect for my friend's gift.

How I Roll

Addressing Envelopes

As you all know, I LOVE sending mail! I also LOVE making mail fun!!!! When I stumbled upon lindsay letters, my idea of addressing envelopes and writing cards changed. The envelope is the first thing someone sees when they open their mailbox.... why not make it fun!?!?!?
